Pomegranate: watercolour painting by Betty Johnson, 1997 [4 of 4]
Pomegranate
Punica granatum L.
Common Names: Pomegranate, Granada (Spanish), Grenade (French). (If soldiers tossed pomegranates into each other's trenches warfare would be much more fun!)
The pomegranate is native to Iran, Afghanistan and northern India. Since ancient times it has been cultivated very widely around the Mediterranean, throughout India and the drier parts of southeast Asia, Malaya, the East Indies and tropical Africa.
